Eco-fashion for the endurance athlete
Team Ganja ‘Smokin the Competition®’ is an eco-fashion brand committed to producing activewear that takes into account not only the environment, but the health of the consumers who will be wearing the clothes and the working conditions of the people involved with making the clothes. Team Ganja supports the mission of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) and adheres to or exceeds the Higg Index developed by SAC
Eco is short for ecology, or the study of interactions between organisms and their environment. Eco-fashion is any brand or line that attempts to minimize the impact on the environment, the health of the consumers, and the working conditions for the people that are making the clothes. Imagine organic cotton, durable, recyclable fabrics, plant-based dyes and a fair wage for the manufacturers and suppliers.
The founders of Team Ganja ‘Smokin the Competition®’ are endurance athletes who understand the need for high quality, long-lasting jerseys, kits, socks, and other apparel that is also comfortable and reduces or eliminates chaffing. Team Ganja is a activewear clothing brand that delivers these qualities while sustaining the environment and respecting the rights of garment industry employees.
Team Ganja’s Commitment
Team Ganja’s founders understand the commitment endurance athletes make to maintaining top conditioning for performance and health. Most triathletes, cyclists, duathletes, marathon and ultra-marathon runners, and other athletes closely monitor what they eat, exercise portion control (sometimes down to the miligram scale!) and hydrate with pure water. Team Ganja is committed to that same standard with respect to the environment and ecological preservation in addition to producing the highest quality racing gear available anywhere.
Your Kit And the Environment
Did you know that the triathlon kit, cycling kit, race t-shirt, or other screen printed clothing you wear generates significant amounts of pollution to produce? In 1995, more than 41 million pounds of toxic compounds were transferred or released into the environment by the printing industry in the United States alone. And the problem has only gotten worse.
Below is a list of the chemicals being released into the environment by the screen printing industry (all of these are petroleum based):
|Chemical||Releases and transfers in millions of pounds|
|Methyl Ethyl Ketone||6.3|
|Methyl Isobutyl Ketone||0.6|

But what about water-based inks? Aren’t they more eco-friendly? Hardly! An advantage often cited for water-based inks is that they do not require organic solvents when cleaning the presses. But there is a common misconception that because water can be used for cleaning screens, squeegees and tools, that the waste water can just be discharged into the sewer. However, the water-based ink is not just water. There are pigments, binders, thickeners, and sometimes, even co-solvents in the ink residue. We do not want or need those in our water supply.
Why Team Ganja is Different
At Team Ganja we decided to do it differently, to stand and protect Mother Nature rather than put our profit motive above what is good for the environment, the people and communities where manufacturing is done.
The textile industry has long and infamous history of sacrificing human capital for monetary gain. As you know even some of the biggest sporting good brands have been enmeshed in controversial working conditions at the factories that make their products. Team Ganja is committed to providing a positive impact and transformative change on the people and communities where our items are produced. The benefits of our policies go beyond just extra income for the workers – they also address issues like Gender Equality and Climate Change. The standards we adhere to ban Child Labor and protect Workers’ Rights.
We use only the best inks on the market today. Our ink of choice is Wilflex Epic Phthalate free inks. They are free of added plasticizers, are certified to be lead-free, and are compliant with the CPSIA laws. They are better for the environment and better for you. We also use water-based inks from Matsui. These inks are both PVC and phthalate-free inks.
When it comes to sustainable apparel, many focus on the materials used to manufacture products, but overlook the system used to print it. Using environmentally-friendly, water-based inks and phthalate-free plastisol inks, we work with our clients to use screen printing solutions that present the least environmental impact depending on their design, desired colors, fabric, and garment style.
Distribution and Shipping
Team Ganja is working with UPS and other package delivery services to improve efficiency and sustainability in the supply chain to final delivery to you. We are utilizing alternative fuel and electric vehicles to offset CO2 associated with our package deliveries. We are partnering with companies like Green Cell Foam so that even our packaging materials are eco-friendly.
TEAM GANJA GETS IT
You get up early. You run in the rain. You lift weights when you’re sore. You swim before work. Your alarm rings way too early. You push your body to do what you have to do despite how much it resists. People shake their heads when you tell them you just rode for 50 miles and then ran for 10. Why?
It’s in your DNA. It is a part of you as much as your brain and your heart are a part of you. You are driven by an unknown force inside of you. Is it fear? Maybe. Is it the will to succeed? That is more likely.
